Bound in black cloth with gilt titling to spine, consisting of a number of separate booklets bound together with their original wrappings preserved. Spine has light toning and scuffing throughout, and rubbing wear to head/tail. Boards have moderate toning throughout, particularly near the spine, scuffing throughout, bumping to fore corners, and a small dark stain to front board. Text block has floral-patterned endpapers, age-toning to edges, Thomas Stephen Cullen ex-libris plate to front pastedown, tipped-in typed sheet with tears to folds serving as Table of Contents page, front cover of “The Diaphragm Phenomenon” loose and laid-in, chipping to margins of a few leaves (text unaffected,) scattered tears to some page edges, some repaired with tape, and age-toning throughout. Contents page is split along the fold, with the loose portion laid-in. Lecture transcripts in rear have editing annotations in pen. Front covers of each booklet are inscribed in pen to Dr. Cullen from Dr. Gwyn. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow.

NOTES

The author, Dr. Norman Beechey Gwyn (1875–1939) was a prominent Canadian physician, medical historian, and officer in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. He was also the nephew of Sir William Osler, one of the founders of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Copies of his journal articles were inscribed to his colleague Dr. Thomas Stephen Cullen (1868–1953), a famous Canadian surgeon and professor of gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, best known medical-history fans for describing "Cullen's sign" (periumbilical bruising linked to ectopic pregnancies and acute pancreatitis). Dr. Cullen had them bound together with transcripts of some of Gwyn’s lectures in this one-off edition, a practice common in the medical community in the late 19th- and early 20th-century.
