Sir William Macewen was a pioneering Scottish surgeon and a major figure in the development of modern neurosurgery. His work Pyogenic Infective Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord was influential for detailing his unprecedented success in localizing and surgically treating intracranial infections, such as brain abscesses, before the advent of modern imaging or antibiotics.
