NOTES

Dr. James E. Garretson, also known as the "father of oral surgery," was an influential dentist known for his role in establishing oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialty in the United States. His most well-known work, A Treatise on the Diseases and Surgery of the Mouth, Jaws and Associate Parts, quicky became hugely influential in 19th-century medial education, bridging the gap between general surgery and dentistry. This work - the second edition, published four years after the first - is "greatly modified and enlarged", with its title updated to reflect Garretson's view of dental surgery as a rigorous system and specialty unto itself.
