THE NATURALIST'S LIBRARY [40 Volumes]

Edinburgh: W.H. Lizars, 1843. Small Octavos, Forty Volumes. In Good Plus condition. Bound in mottled brown half leather with marbled paper boards, with a few volumes showing some paper loss. Gilt decoration and gilt lettering to spines, that has five raised rings. Each of the 4 different series have a different design on the spine. General wear to head and tails of spines, edges, and corners of boards. Scuffing to spines and boards. End papers have a distinctive light marbled design. Text block is trimmed with the top edge gilt. Most pages are white and supple, except where noted. This set is 1/4" taller than the first edition. 1289 color plates, 59 engravings.
This is a reissue of the set released between 1833 and 1843. In 1843 they released the 40 volumes as one set, with the books numbered on the top of the spine 1 to 40 and the title changes to Jardine's Naturalist Library, though the title pages have the same title as the previous edition. New title pages were inserted showing the 1843 date, with the original title pages and dates maintained.
Volume 2 & 33 have new spine that is without the raised rings, and the decorations are in light brown ink instead of gilt.
Volumes 17, 21, 30, 34 & 35 are missing the lower labels denoting which series (Mammallia, Ornithology, etc) plus the volume number within that series. Volume 5 is missing the top label.
Volume 8 has 1/2 of the bottom spine end chipped off. Volume 19 has parts of the upper and lower spine chipped off. Volume 28 is missing a small piece of the spine
The following volumes have damp staining: 2, 3, 8, 11. Shelved in Octavo Overflow.
