Text block has light scuffing to edges, marbled endpapers, a previous owner's embossed stamp to front free end page, and small label to rear pastedown. Signed flat by Carleton B. Chapman on the publisher's limitation page; additionally inscribed "Sept. 21, 1994/To Gert Brieger/Of whose Department I was a grateful member during the decade I devoted to the JSB biography.
