SENUFO KPELIE-TYPE WOODEN MASK, IVORY COAST
Ivory Coast. This carved wooden mask features the elongated oval face and balanced symmetry characteristic of Senufo Kpelie masks, with narrow slit eyes, a long triangular nose, and a gridded projecting mouth. A seated female figure surmounts the crest, symbolizing fertility, ancestral presence, and spiritual protection. Masks of this type were used during initiations, funerary rites, and ceremonial performances, embodying ideals of harmony, wisdom, and moral order. Dimensions approximately 13 × 7.5 × 3 inches In Very Good condition. Surface residue and accumulated soiling throughout. General abrasions, edge wear, scattered scratches, and minor surface losses. Stable 1-inch crack on the lower proper right side of the face. Loss measuring approximately 1.5 × 0.25 inches on the lower proper left edge.
