ORIGINAL TRUMAN W. BROPHY ADMITTANCE LETTER TO THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS

American College of Surgeons, 1913. Original 1913 letter of certification to Truman W. Brophy from the American College of Surgeons in Very Good condition inside Good frame. Letter shows toning and yellowing throughout, with foxing or spotting to edges and minor bleeding from red letter inking. Letter signed in ink by John J. Bowman, director; John M. T. Finney, president; Franklin H. Martin, general secretary; and Albert J. Ochsner, treasurer. Frame bears initialls "F.A.C.S." on top, with chipping and moderate shelf wear throughout. Small break with lost frame material to bottom left edge. NOTE: Letter has not been examined outside of frame.

Born in Illinois in 1848, Truman W. Brophy rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century as one of the world's foremost oral surgeons. In addition to founding the Chicago College of Dental Surgery in 1882, Brophy is remembered for developing innovative techniques to repair cleft lips and palates, one of which, the "Brophy Operation", bears his name.
