SONGYE WOODEN SHIELD, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Congo. Carved from a single piece of wood, this elongated Songye shield features a projecting mask-like face framed by finely incised geometric crosshatched patterns covering nearly the entire surface. The shield served as both a functional object of protection and a symbol of strength, identity, and spiritual guardianship. The abstract facial features invoke ancestral presence, while the intricate geometric carving reflects the Songye tradition of disciplined craftsmanship. The reverse retains its original carved handgrip, indicating practical use. Dimensions approximately 25.5 × 12 × 4 inches In Good condition with moderate surface wear including abrasion, areas of surface loss, and accumulated residue. Noticeable loss and chipping on the lower edge of the projecting face. Wear along the edges and a fine 1.5-inch crack at the lower right edge.
