SONGYE PAINTED WOODEN MASK, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Congo. Carved in a circular format, this painted wooden mask features stylized half-closed eyes, a triangular projecting nose, and geometric motifs arranged symmetrically across the surface, painted in red, cream, black, and blue pigments. Masks of this type were made mainly as decorative works inspired by Central African artistic traditions rather than for ceremonial use. The bold geometric design reflects the enduring influence of traditional Congolese visual language adapted for display. Dimensions approximately 12 × 11.25 inches. In Very Good condition with surface abrasion, discoloration, scattered scratches, and minor chipping on the edges and tip of the nose.
