BAKOTA FOUR-FACED GUARDIAN MASK, GABON

Gabon. Hand-carved wooden four-face mask featuring a central elongated face flanked by three subsidiary faces in a symmetrical composition. Painted in black and white pigments with stylized motifs, almond-shaped eyes, and a carved cylindrical neck. Created as a decorative work inspired by traditional Central African carving traditions. Dimensions approximately 23.5 × 17 × 3 inches In Very Good condition. Surface soil and accumulated residue throughout. Heavy abrasion and rubbing to painted surfaces with scattered paint loss. Fine shallow surface cracking throughout. Moderate chipping along the outer edges. Partial loss to the carved mouth of the upper figure. Loss to the tip of the nose and minor losses to the left side of the face. Water staining is visible. White residue and accretion are present around the carved rattan-style base.
