IGBO PAINTED WOODEN MASK, NIGERIA
Nigeria. This hand-carved Igbo-style mask has an elongated oval face painted in white and blue, with narrow blue-accented eyes, a vertical nose, and a small rectangular mouth. Geometric carvings along the edges provide rhythmic ornamentation. These masks were worn in masquerade performances to honor ancestors, celebrate communal events, and uphold spiritual and social traditions in Igbo society. Dimensions approximately 18 × 7.5 × 3.5 inches In Good condition with moderate surface wear, including soil, staining, accumulated residue, and abrasions throughout. Areas of paint loss and flaking, with chipping and edge wear concentrated along the vertical center extending from the forehead to the tip of the nose and around the lower facial perimeter.
