LUBA CEREMONIAL PADDLE (MWIKO), DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Democratic Republic of the Congo. A carved ceremonial paddle (mwiko) topped by standing male and female ancestral figures in an embracing pose. Used as a prestigious insignia during Luba court ceremonies and public rituals, it symbolized authority, lineage, and ancestral power instead of serving a practical function. The paired figures represent the balance of male and female ancestors, emphasizing dynastic continuity and social harmony. Dimensions approximately 57 × 6 × 2¾ inches In Very Good condition. Light surface wear with scattered dust and minor rubbing on raised areas. Abrasions and scratches appear on the lower tip of the staff.
