BOBO PAINTED WOODEN (BLACK & BEIGE) BIRD SHOULDER MASK, BURKINA FASO

Burkina Faso. Hand-carved bird shoulder mask from the Bobo society of Burkina Faso, made of wood and painted with black and beige linear and dotted geometric motifs. The stylized avian form features a tall vertical crest, a projecting beak, broad, outstretched wings, and a tapered breast, exemplifying the bold abstract forms characteristic of Bobo ceremonial sculpture. Traditionally worn on the shoulders during masquerade performances, these bird forms embody spiritual beings linked to fertility, renewal, and the agricultural cycle. Dimensions approximately 32.5 x 13 x 6 inches In Very Good condition. Surface wear, abrasions, scattered paint loss, staining, accumulated residue, and discoloration are present throughout. Minor chipping and losses occur along edges and high points, including both sides of the head. There is a fine 3-inch crack at the center of the breast.
