Burkina Faso. Hand-carved bird shoulder mask from the Bobo society of Burkina Faso, made of wood and decorated with red, black, and beige geometric painted motifs. The elongated avian form features a projecting beak and a patterned body, reflecting the bold, abstract aesthetic of Bobo ceremonial sculpture. Traditionally worn on the shoulders during masquerade performances, these bird forms embody spiritual beings associated with fertility, renewal, and the agricultural cycle. Dimensions approximately 35 x 10 x 5.5 inches In Very Good condition. Surface wear including residue, abrasions, discoloration, and scattered losses to the painted surface is present throughout, with a small chip at the tip of the breast. Minor wear and edge abrasions are visible on the crest, beak, and painted surfaces.
