MOSI ANTELOPE WOODEN MASK, BURKINA FASO

Burkina Faso. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden mask attributed to the Mossi (Mosi) people of Burkina Faso depicts a stylized antelope form. It features an elongated oval face with a projecting ridge nose, cylindrical facial elements, pierced geometric motifs, and tall arched horns. Painted in black, white, red, and blue pigments, the mask embodies themes of agricultural fertility, social order, and ancestral protection. Dimensions are approximately 22 x 4 x 9 inches. In Very Good condition with heavy accumulated residue, abrasions, pigment loss, a shrinkage crack at the horn apex, natural knot-related cracking on the proper left cheek, and wear to the lower edge. The lower edge shows noticeable wear, losses, and softening from handling and use.
