IGBO SLIT DRUM, NIGERIA

Nigeria: 20th century. Hand-carved wooden slit drum formed as a standing female figure with elongated neck, stylized coiffure, and cylindrical hollow body. The front features a long vertical slit opening into the resonating chamber, a characteristic feature of traditional slit drums used for music, signaling, and ceremonial purposes. The surface exhibits substantial age, handling wear, and an attractive dark patina. Mounted on a later display base. Dimensions: Approximately 28 in. x 6 in. x 6 in. Condition: Overall good condition with age-related wear, scattered surface abrasions, shrinkage cracks consistent with age, and losses to the original surface finish. Mounted on a later custom display base.
