CARVED WOOD MASK OF DAN
Liberia/Côte d'Ivoire: 20th century. Carved wooden passport mask depicting a serene human face with elongated oval form, high domed forehead, almond-shaped eyes, and small pursed mouth. The perimeter is pierced with attachment holes for securing cloth or fiber elements, while the surface retains a dark, well-worn patina suggestive of ritual or ceremonial use. Such miniature masks, known as passport masks, were often carried by individuals as personal protective objects and symbols of social identity. Dan examples are particularly admired for their refined naturalism and balanced proportions. Dimensions: Approximately 9 in. x 5.5 in. x 4.5 in. In Good overall condition with age-related wear throughout. Surface exhibits areas of abrasion, loss to the dark patina, and scattered small insect or handling marks. Minor shrinkage cracking visible at the crown and along the rim, with expected wear to perforations from use.
