PAINTED WOOD FEMALE FIGURE WITH MOVABLE ARMS, IBIBIO OF NIGERIA
Nigeria. A painted wooden female figure with articulated movable arms, shown with an elongated neck, rounded torso, stylized facial features, and a large ribbed coiffure extending to either side of the head. The figure has a dark painted surface with traces of red pigment at the mouth and scattered areas of exposed wood. The lower base is decorated with incised bust-like figures, suggesting a social, ancestral, or communal reference. The movable arms suggest the figure may have been associated with display, performance, or ceremonial presentation. Dimensions: Approximately 19 x 9.5 x 10 inches In Good condition. Severe surface wear throughout, including extensive paint loss, abrasions, discoloration, and exposed wood. Paint loss is especially noticeable on the face and back of the neck. Chipping and losses to the proper right eyelid, ears, fingers, and along raised edges. Scattered scratches and cracks throughout, including cracks at the base. Additional wear at the shoulder joints and movable arm areas.
