CARVED ANCESTOR FIGURE, MOSSI OF BURKINA FASO
Burkina Faso: Early 20th century. Fine West African carved wooden ancestor figure, attributed to the Mossi or a related Gur-speaking culture of Burkina Faso. The sculpture depicts a standing male figure with highly elongated proportions, prominent blade-form nose, pointed ears, incised facial scarification, and a worn sacrificial patina suggestive of ritual use. The restrained geometric carving and powerful abstraction are characteristic of sculptural traditions of the Voltaic region of Burkina Faso and northern Ghana. Dimensions: Measures ~35 in. x 8 in. 6 in. Condition: Figure exhibits substantial age and use wear throughout. Surface displays extensive abrasion and loss to the original patina, with scattered scratches, nicks, dents, and areas of surface erosion consistent with prolonged handling and ritual use. Minor edge wear and small losses are present to the ears, nose, hands, and base. Expected age-related shrinkage cracks and checking visible in places, but no major structural splits or repairs observed. Surface retains an attractive, weathered appearance with evidence of age and traditional use.
