YORUBA GELEDE HELMET MASK, NIGERIA
20th century. Yoruba Gelede helmet mask from Nigeria, carved in wood with an exceptionally elaborate openwork superstructure rising above a serene white-faced visage. The mask features narrow slit eyes, pronounced ears, traces of red pigment at the lips, and a dramatic coiffure embellished with concentric circular motifs highlighted in white and blue. The towering crest, composed of arched and wheel-like elements, reflects the imaginative sculptural traditions associated with Gelede masquerades honoring female spiritual power and ancestral wisdom. Condition: Carved wood helmet mask displaying age-related wear throughout. Surface abrasion and scattered losses to painted decoration, particularly the white facial pigment. Visible shrinkage crack to the rear of the headdress, with minor chips and losses to several projecting elements of the elaborate crest. Scattered surface accretions, rubbing, and handling wear consistent with use. Retains traces of black, white, red, and blue pigments and presents well overall with a stable structure and attractive patina.
