ANTHROPOMORPHIC LOCK, DOGON OF MALI
Carved wooden anthropomorphic lock or locking mechanism, likely originating from the Dogon region of Mali. The figure is constructed around a horizontal sliding bolt and features a highly stylized human form with geometric head, recessed facial features, cylindrical torso, and simplified limbs. Traditional locks of this type were used on granaries and domestic structures and often incorporated protective symbolic imagery. The surface exhibits substantial age wear, patination, shrinkage cracking, and evidence of prolonged use. Mounted on a modern display base. Dimensions: Measures ~18 in. x 6.5 in. x 5.5 in. Condition: Overall good antique condition with substantial age and use wear. The wooden surface exhibits a dark, well-developed patina with scattered abrasions, scratches, and handling marks throughout. Expected shrinkage cracks and separations are present, particularly around joints and carved elements, consistent with age and the natural movement of the wood. Wear and rounding to edges, extremities, and projecting portions of the lock mechanism. Minor losses and surface erosion visible, especially to the feet and edges of the horizontal bolt. The internal lock cavities show use-related wear and accumulated patination. Mounted on a later custom display stand.
