LIDDED DIVINATION VESSEL, BAULE OF IVORY COAST

Early 20th century. Exceptional hand-carved hardwood container featuring a domed lid surmounted by a striking pair of opposed birds, the vessel body richly decorated with intricate geometric engraving and retaining its original suspension cord. The form and decorative vocabulary are characteristic of Baule carving traditions of Ivory Coast region, where such vessels were used to store valued possessions, ritual materials, medicines, or ceremonial offerings. The dark, lustrous patina and evident wear attest to age and handling, while the sculptural bird finial reflects themes of ancestry, protection, and spiritual communication. Dimensions: Measures ~14.5 in. x 7 in. x 7 in. Condition: In Very Good condition with minor surface wear.
