SEATED WOOD FIGURE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
Democratic Republic of the Congo: Early 20th Century. African carved wooden figural stool, likely Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba/Hemba tradition, 20th century. Finely carved from a single piece of hardwood, the stool depicts a seated female figure with elongated proportions, expressive facial features, and hands raised to the mouth in a contemplative pose. The figure serves as the structural support for the seat, a form associated with prestige and ancestral imagery in Central African carving traditions. The sculpture retains a rich, dark patina with attractive surface wear from age and handling, along with scattered abrasions, minor losses, and stable age-related shrinkage cracks consistent with traditional use. Unlike many surviving examples, the stool remains structurally sound and free of significant insect damage, preserving its strong visual presence and display appeal. Dimensions: Measures ~22 in. x 7 in. x 7.5 in. Condition: In Good condition overall with minor surface wear and age cracks.
