KUBA WOODEN MASK WITH RAFFIA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
This Kuba mask features an elongated facial form with projecting eyes, a broad nose, and a narrow mouth. The lower face is decorated with incised geometric motifs highlighted with white pigment, creating a patterned surface typical of Kuba aesthetic traditions. The mask has a raffia fiber surround attached along the perimeter, enhancing its ceremonial appearance and suggesting use in masquerade performances linked to social, political, and ritual functions. Dimensions: approximately 23 x 7.5 x 7 inches In Good condition. The surface shows scattered abrasions, paint loss, and discoloration. Numerous insect holes and surface losses appear throughout. Two hairline cracks, about 2 and 3 inches long, extend above the upper left and right eyes. Minor chips, edge losses, and linear cracks are along the rear perimeter and interior edge. Raffia fibers show expected age-related brittleness, fragmentation, and losses.
