NOTES
On September 18, 1998, South African President Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was presented with an honorary doctorate of law from Harvard University. The ceremony in which the degree was conferred marked only the third time that Harvard held a special convocation for a single person—the first being George Washington in 1776 and the second Winston Churchill in 1942.
