Catherine Macaulay's eight volume series on English history from 1603 to 1683 was written from 1763 to 1783. After adjusting the time frame of her history late in the writing process, the final three volumes were renamed. Macaulay's history was hailed as a whiggish response to David Hume's own supposedly tory history of England. Macaulay was the first Englishwoman to become a published historian and, notably, very sympathetic to the American colonists' cause.
