NOTES
As Herman Melville's third novel, "Mardi: And A Voyage Thither" functioned as a transition towards more philosophical writing which would later produce his opus, "Moby Dick." While Melville, "Moby Dick," and his entire body of work would become iconic in the American literary canon, "Mardi" was a critical disappointment because of it's confusing multi-layered nature. The novel is now appreciated for the look it offers into Melville's development as an author.
