Philadelphia: 1846. Original 1846 University of Pennsylvania Doctor of Medicine diploma issued to Joel E. Turner, featuring an extraordinary group of signatures from some of the most important physicians and medical educators in 19th century America. Signees include founding president of American Medical Association, Nathaniel Chapman, chemist Robert Hare, surgeon William Gibson, anatomist William E. Horner, physician George B. Wood, obstetrician Hugh L. Hodge, and noted clinician Samuel Jackson. Executed entirely in ornate Latin manuscript with elaborate calligraphic flourishes, the diploma represents the golden age of Philadelphia medicine, when the University of Pennsylvania stood at the forefront of medical education in the United States. In Very Good condition overall with age toning, creasing, wear along edges, and small closed tear to bottom left corner. Only a portion of original ribbon remains (missing usual seal). Shelved at Rockville Room J (tube storage).
