NOTES

Moe Berg was an American professional baseball player, linguist, and wartime spy whose remarkably unconventional life made him one of the most fascinating figures in sports history. Born in 1902, Berg played as a catcher for several Major League Baseball teams, including the Brooklyn Robins, Chicago White Sox, and Boston Red Sox, but became far more famous for his intellect than his athletic statistics. Fluent in numerous languages and educated at Princeton University and Columbia Law School, Berg was recruited during World War II by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA, where he undertook intelligence missions in Europe related to Nazi scientific research and the development of atomic weapons. His unusual dual identity as both ballplayer and spy later inspired books, documentaries, and films, cementing his legacy as one of the most enigmatic personalities ever associated with American baseball.
