Muriel Spark has been a notable Scottish author since her debut novel in 1957, "The Comforters." She was made a DBE in 1993 for her contributions to the literary canon of the British Isles. "The Very Fine Clock" is her only children's book.

Edward Gorey (1925–2000) was an American writer, illustrator, and designer best known for his darkly whimsical pen-and-ink drawings and macabre literary works. His distinctive Victorian-inspired style combined gothic humor, surreal narratives, and meticulous crosshatched illustrations in books such as The Gashlycrumb Tinies and Amphigorey. Beyond publishing, Gorey also designed acclaimed theatrical sets and costumes, including the Tony Award-winning production of Dracula on Broadway.
