NOTES

Milwaukee artist Gregg Klees is best remembered as a longtime illustrator, cartoonist, and designer for the Milwaukee Journal and Journal Communications, where he worked for more than three decades and became especially well known for reviving the newspaper’s beloved annual deer-hunting cartoons in the 1980s. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Klees combined sharp observational humor with highly detailed draftsmanship rooted in everyday Wisconsin life, particularly outdoor culture and regional traditions. Although initially a “city kid” with little hunting experience, he immersed himself in the subject matter to create cartoons that became enormously popular with Wisconsin readers and are now regarded as nostalgic pieces of Midwestern newspaper illustration history. Beyond cartooning, Klees also produced watercolor and illustrative artwork connected to Milwaukee’s cultural scene, and his work has been recognized by regional museums and collectors for its blend of humor, storytelling, and strong sense of place within Wisconsin visual culture.
