Fukuda Hatsujiro, c.1880-1890s. A refined and visually striking Meiji-period Japanese woodblock triptych by the noted artist Yōshū Chikanobu, dating to 1887 (Meiji 20), and published by Fukuda Hatsujirō. This elegant composition belongs to the celebrated “Chiyoda no Ōoku / Chiyoda no Omote” series, depicting idealized scenes of courtly life within the Imperial Palace grounds. The present scene shows finely dressed nobles gathered beneath blossoming cherry trees, rendered with delicate linework and a soft, harmonious palette characteristic of Chikanobu’s mature style. Publisher and date seals are clearly visible, confirming an original Meiji-era printing rather than a later reproduction. Some light toning and minor spotting consistent with age are present, along with expected fold lines from original issue; overall, a highly decorative and desirable example of late 19th-century Japanese printmaking, well-suited for display.
