Pennsylvania: 1894. Original Doctor of Medicine diploma issued May 8, 1874 by the historic Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, the pioneering institution founded in 1850 as the first medical school in the world established to train women physicians. This large and beautifully engraved Latin diploma confers the degree of “Doctorem Arte Medendi” (Doctor of Medicine) upon Mariam Elizabeth Copham. The document is printed in ornate calligraphy on silk or parchment-style material and retains its original ribbon and seal attachment. The diploma bears the manuscript signatures of several notable faculty members associated with early medical education for women, including: Clara Marshall (Professor of Materia Medica and later Dean of the college), Frances Emily White (Professor of Physiology and Hygiene), Anna M. Broomall (Professor of Obstetrics), William H. Pancoast (Professor of Anatomy), and John B. Roberts (Professor of Surgery). Shelved at Rockville Room J (tubes).
