LATE 19th-CENTURY "W.W. KEEN SURGICAL SOCIETY" MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE
Philadelphia. Large and decorative membership certificate from the W. W. Keen Surgical Society of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. The document recognizes Samuel Melvin Hauck for his professional fitness and ability and grants him membership in the society. The certificate bears a prominent embossed seal and features elaborate period typography typical of late 19th-century academic and medical documents. Signed by multiple individuals but all signatures have faded and most are illegible. In Good condition with moderate toning, fold lines, evidence of extended exposure to moisture, and general age wear. Shelved at Rockville Room J (MW Shelf).

NOTES
The society was named for Dr. William Williams Keen (1837–1932), one of the most important American surgeons of the era and a pioneering neurosurgeon associated with Jefferson Medical College. Keen served as president of the American Medical Association and was a prominent figure in American surgical education.
