Harvey Williams Cushing (1869-1939) was an American surgeon known as the father of modern neurosurgery. Educated at Yale University and Harvard Medical School, he pioneered safer brain surgery techniques and helped establish neurosurgery as a distinct medical field. He also identified Cushing’s disease and won the Pulitzer Prize for his biography of Sir William Osler.
Percival Sylvester Bailey (1892-1973) was an American neurologist and neuropathologist best known for his pioneering work in the classification of brain tumors. Collaborating with Harvey Cushing, he helped develop one of the first systematic classifications of gliomas. Bailey also conducted important research on the cerebral cortex and psychiatric disorders, helping bridge the fields of neurology and psychiatry.
