NOTES

This is volume 19 of the "Histoire Romaine" written by the Jesuits François Catrou and Julien Rouillé (published in 21 volumes, 1725-1748), complete in itself, from the Roman year 722 to the year 766. The work is illustrated with a frontispiece, a fold-out map of Egypt and 8 plates of medals, one of which is a fold-out.

George Baillie (1664-1738) was a Scottish politician and landowner who played a significant role in the political life of Scotland during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was the son of Robert Baillie of Jerviswood, who was implicated in the 1683 Rye House Plot against King Charles II.
Baillie served as a member of the Scottish Parliament and was an active supporter of the 1707 Acts of Union between Scotland and England. After the union, he represented Scottish constituencies in the Parliament of Great Britain, aligning with the Whig party. Known for his administrative experience and steady political influence, he also held several government positions, including roles connected to the Scottish treasury.
Beyond politics, Baillie managed substantial estates and was part of a network of influential Scottish families. He remained active in public affairs well into his later years, leaving a legacy as a committed Whig and supporter of the constitutional settlement that shaped early 18th-century Britain.
