NOTES

One of only 100 copies produced on Winterbourne paper for members of the Harvey Cushing society, as stated in the colophon and indicated by the line "Printed for the Society" on the title page. This specific copy was inscribed by Cushing to Temple Fay. Fay, an accomplished neurosurgeon in his own right, was one of the founders of the Harvey Cushing Society, which was established to advance the field of neurosurgery and exists today as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Cushing's familiar language and use of his initials when signing (as opposed to his full name) indicates a close relationship between Fay and himself. This book, then, evidences not only Cushing's long and distinguished career, but his involvement with and lasting impact on the generations of neurosurgeons to come after him.
