NOTES

Hervé Bazin (1911-1996) was a French novelist best known for his sharp, psychologically driven portraits of family life and rebellion against social convention. He rose to prominence with Vipère au poing (1948), a largely autobiographical novel. He was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1960 and served as its president from 1973 to 1996, playing a major role in shaping postwar French literary life.
