Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1893. Later American Edition. Octavos, Eleven Volumes (out of a total twelve). In Very Good condition. Bound in matching navy morocco half bindings with marbled paper boards; spines paneled with gilt decoration and lettering; top edges gilt, with marbled endpapers. Boards show moderate rubbing along edges and at the fore corners, with small sections of exposed board. spines lightly sunned. Vol. I shows heavier rubbing along joints and at head/tail. Sparse marginal chipping and tearing present. Fore edges of some signatures remain uncut.

ALS pasted to front free endpaper of Vol. I, handwritten by Louis Adolphe Thiers and dated "Novembre 1847". Thiers, in addition to being the author of this work, was a prominent French statesmen and historian who served as president of France from 1871-1873. This letter consists of Thiers' polite refusal to purchase a Chinese vase due to the high asking price and his ownership of a similar vase. The letter is lightly age toned and foxed, with a closed tear to the tip of the bottom left corner.
