NOTES

Watanabe Seitei (1852–1918), also known as Watanabe Shōtei, was a Japanese Nihonga painter and among the earliest Japanese artists to visit Europe. He attended the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris, where he was awarded a medal. Seitei developed a distinctive style that fused Western naturalistic realism with the refined colors and subtle washes of the Kikuchi Yōsai school, helping to pioneer a new approach to kachōga (bird-and-flower painting).
