SET OF FOUR EARLY 20th CENTURY JAPANESE PRINTS
Japan: 1900 - 1930. A set of four Japanese prints from late Meiji to early Shōwa Era, each capturing a unique facet of Japan’s artistic and cultural transition from the Meiji to the early Shōwa period. Presented together under glass in a 14 in. x 31.5 in. gold-painted wooden frame with a deep red mat. Individual prints each measure 6 in. x 8.5 in.
Kabuki Scene Print (leftmost):
A color woodblock print depicting three kabuki actors in elaborate costumes before Mount Fuji. The bold palette and theatrical expressions typify late Meiji kabuki imagery.
Commercial Advertisement (second from left):
A monochrome lithograph featuring circular vignettes of household goods—likely an early advertisement for domestic products. Its refined linear design reflects the emergence of modern commercial graphics in Japan.
Illustrated Broadside (third from left):
A sepia printed leaflet with figures in traditional dress, possibly from a serialized story or kabuki theater program. The delicate linework and layout represent popular printed media from Japan’s turn-of-the-century publishing scene.
Cosmetic Product Label (rightmost):
A vivid lithographic advertisement for Mitsuwa Sekken Gyoen Hakufun (Mitsuwa Soap and Gyoen Face Powder). Executed in red, blue, and cream tones with stylized chrysanthemums, the design embodies the sophistication of early Japanese packaging art. Publisher noted at lower left: Tokyo Bunseidō Printing.
In Very Good condition. Prints with light toning and faint foxing; small pinholes from previous mounting are visible along the margins. Colors remain bright and well-preserved. The frame exhibits minor wear. Shelved at Dupont.
