NOTES
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was a black student -led civil rights organization established in April 1960 which worked in the American South for a decade. The organization had a staff of field secretaries who worked in direct action (sit-ins, marches, Freedom Rides) and voter registration. The work of SNCC is directly responsible for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.
In 2010 SNCC hosted a 50th Anniversary Conference. The program book for the conference was signed by 22 SNCC veterans and former staff members who worked at both the Atlanta and New York offices.
John Lewis (1940–2020) was a pivotal leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, notably serving as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and one of the "Big Six" organizers of the 1963 March on Washington. He championed nonviolent protest, participating in Freedom Rides and leading the voting rights march in Selma, Alabama. Lewis later served for over three decades as a respected U.S. Congressman for Georgia. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
