Born February 21, 1962 in Ithaca, New York, David Foster Wallace was a novelist, essayist, and university professor of English and creative writing. "The Broom of the System" was published in 1987 as Wallace's debut novel adapted from his undergraduate honors theses. "The Broom of the System" would receive mixed reviews, many praising it's writing but criticizing the handling of it's philosophy, winning the 1987 Whiting Award.
