First issue dust jacket notable for the "$3.95" price and "0561" date stamp at the lower corner of the front flap. Walker Percy was born May 28, 1916 in Birmigham, AL. Percy would study chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, going on to practice medicine, though he didn't enjoy it. After surviving a bout of tuberculosis in 1944, Percy would leave medicine to pursue writing. Percy became greatly influenced by existentialist works of Søren Kierkegaard as well as Catholicism and writers such as Dante Alighieri. These ideas alongside his experiences at Chapel Hill would come together in Percy's first and greatest work "The Moviegoer". "The Moviegoer" would be published to widespread acclaim, winning the U.S. National Book Award and solidifying Percy as one of the major voices of the South.
