Wole Soyinka was born in Abeokuta Nigeria in 1934. He is playwright, poet, novelist and actor who is widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest writers and one of the world’s most important dramatists. In 1986, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first African Laureat. "The Man Died" is a non-fiction book published in 1972, which explores Soyinka's experience being incarcerated for 22 months during the Nigerian Civil War. In 1984, a Nigerian court banned the book. However, the book gained widespread prominence and in 2011 the Guardian included "The Man Died" on their list of 100 greatest non-fiction books.
