Wole Soyinka was born in Abeokuta Nigeria in 1934. He is playwright, poet, novelist and actor who is widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest writers and one of the world’s most important dramatists. In 1986, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first African Laureat. “A Dance Of The Forests” was Soyinka’s theatrical debut and is one of his most recognizable plays. It was first performed at the Nigerian Independence celebrations in 1960, and was later published in New York and London in 1963. The play portrayed Nigerian politics as aimless and corrupt which angered many of Nigeria’s elite and politicians. However, despite the criticisms and backlash from some in Nigeria, it gained prominence and remains an influential piece of art today.
