General shelf wear, primarily to head and tail of spine and to corners and bottom edges of boards. Large chip missing from label. Mild scuffing and staining to boards. Pen to front pastedown. Previous owner's signatures to front free endpaper and ownership page. Penciling to verso of plate at page 222. Age toning with mild staining scattered throughout textblock.
1 3/8 inches thickness, black-and-white pictorial endpapers, boldface type to publisher's imprint on spine, medium blue cloth binding with pictorial label, and 12 tipped-in full-color plates coated on printed side only indicate first printing. First state indicated by the perfection of letter "k" on the fourth line of page 193 (later copies in this printing lack the top serif).
