Dust jacket is wrapped in a mylar covering, price is uncut "$4.50", has mild chipping along the extremities, stains on the flaps and rear cover, a small closed tear along the rear head edge, and mild age-toning throughout. Boards have moderate age-toning along the head and tail edge, stains on the spine, and mild wear along the spine head and tail edges. Textblock has stains on the end-pages and pastedowns, mild wear along the edges, and light foxing along the head edge. Signed flat by James Salter on the title page. DL consignment. James Arnold Horowitz was born June 10, 1925 in Passaic, NJ. He would first use his penname while writing his first novel, "The Hunters" in 1956 as he was then serving in the military in Germany and France. After earning a film deal with CinemaScope Salter was able to leave active duty, and adopted his pen name as his true name. "A Sport and a Pastime" is an erotic novel Salter, ever critical of his own work, would name as the only one of his novels to reach close to his standards. Being published in 1967 during the sexual revolution, "A Sport and a Pastime" would see immense commercial and critical success, and continues to enjoy much positive critical reception, even after Salter's death in 2015.
