London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme; Printed By and For Nichols, Son, and Bentley, 1808 - 1817. First Editions. Quartos, Three Volumes. In Good minus condition. Volumes I and II leather, with gilt tooling to front and back boards. Volume III is bound in three-quarter leather and marbled paper boards. All three volumes have been rebacked in matching leather, gilt lettering to spines. Boards show significant wear to bottom edges, leather along joints of spine, and to corners (boards exposed on bottom corners of Vols. II and III). Text blocks have some light shelf wear to gilt bottom edge of Vol. II, and moderate foxing to front and rear matter of all volumes. Ownership inscriptions appear on the front free end pages of Vols. I and II, and the ex libris of former owner Dr. Ronald Paulson (formerly professor of English literature at Yale and Johns Hopkins, a leading authority on William Hogarth, and the author of twenty-three works on English literary and art history) appear at the front of all three volumes. The 19th-century heraldic ex libris of "Thomas Fitz-Gerald" appears on the paste down of Vol. I. All plates appear to be present. All edges gilt. Includes the uncommon third, or supplemental volume, published in 1817.
