All volumes privately bound in matching half-leather and marbled paper boards (with matching end papers), with gilt-lettered red spine labels. Boards show moderate wear or bumping to corners, light plus wear to leather along joints and on spines, and light shelf wear overall. Some boards very slightly bowed. Text blocks have light age toning overall, with some pencil annotations to several volumes. Annotations likely in the hand of Dr. Ronald Paulson, formerly professor of English literature at Yale and Johns Hopkins, was a leading authority on William Hogarth, and the author of twenty-three works on English literary and art history. The ex libris of Dr. Paulson appears on the front paste down of each volume.

An attractive matching set in 19th-century bindings, appearing to contain the complete fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
